As tensions escalate in the ongoing border blockade orchestrated by Polish truckers, Kyiv is making preparations to evacuate Ukrainian truckers stranded in the chaos. Deputy Infrastructure Minister Serhii Derkach announced the move, citing worsening conditions and a lack of time for compromise. The situation has taken a grim turn with the death of a Ukrainian trucker waiting at the border on November 23, the second fatality during the blockade. While Polish authorities attribute the deaths to natural causes, investigations are ongoing.
The blockade, which began on November 6 in protest of EU transport rule liberalization for Ukrainian trucks, has triggered disruptions and fatalities, intensifying the strain on both sides. Polish truckers argue that an influx of Ukrainian drivers is harming local businesses, a claim denied by Ukrainian officials and industry representatives. The EU has urged Poland to end the blockade, emphasizing the need for a resolution. Despite assurances by protesting Polish truckers that the blockade would only affect non-essential goods, reports suggest delays for trucks carrying humanitarian aid and essential goods.
The situation has further escalated with Slovak truckers initiating a parallel blockade on the Slovakia border. Negotiations have thus far failed to bring about a resolution, and the blockade, now in its third week, continues to impact essential trade and the well-being of truckers caught in the crossfire.
