In a recent meeting in Ankara titled “Human Rights and Crimean Tatars in the Occupied Part of Ukraine,” Dmytro Lubinets, the Commissioner for Human Rights in Ukraine, highlighted the severe persecution and repression faced by the indigenous Crimean Tatars in the temporarily occupied Crimea. Lubinets stated that Crimean Tatars are the most targeted group, with 190 political prisoners, of which 123 are Crimean Tatars, held in violation of international humanitarian norms. The Commissioner condemned Russia’s actions, including the deportation of Ukrainian children since 2014, emphasizing the ongoing war in Ukraine and the widespread violation of fundamental rights. The situation is dire, with citizens in the occupied territory facing exploitation, human trafficking, and blatant violations of basic rights. Lubinets underscored the urgent need to address the plight of Ukrainians held captive by the Russian Federation, currently numbering 28,000.
