Romania is set to play a key role in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities, as President Klaus Iohannis has requested parliamentary approval to create a maritime training facility for Ukrainian marines. The proposed center would be built on Romanian soil, with support from the international community and full funding and planning assistance from the UK.
In a letter to parliament, Iohannis stressed the importance of stepping up efforts to train Ukraine’s armed forces in light of the ongoing war with Russia. “Recent developments have underlined the need to intensify and diversify the training of the Ukrainian armed forces,” he wrote. The facility, which will focus on training Ukrainian naval infantry, will be integrated within Romania’s existing capabilities, reinforcing the country’s commitment to supporting its neighbor.
The training center is part of the broader initiative of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG), a coalition of 57 countries.
