Today marks the solemn 90th anniversary of the Holodomor-Genocide of 1932–1933, a harrowing chapter in Ukrainian history orchestrated by Stalin’s totalitarian regime. Renowned Polish lawyer Rafał Lemkin, a pioneer in genocide recognition, delivered a poignant speech in 1953, testifying to the deliberate “starvation” and the broader campaign to annihilate the Ukrainian nation through Russification, cultural persecution, and repression.
Since Ukraine’s independence, 28 states and three international organizations, including the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, have officially recognized the Holodomor as genocide. Notably, this year, 55 UN member states and the EU delegation signed a Declaration initiated by Ukraine, reaffirming the tragic event’s significance.
February 2022 starkly revealed that Moscow’s motives persist over the past 90 years, with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine aiming to erase its existence and obliterate its people, culture, language, and history. Unprecedented acts of brutality, including civilian killings, executions, child kidnappings, and attacks on critical infrastructure, provide irrefutable evidence of Russia committing genocide during its war of aggression.
Furthermore, Russia employs food and hunger as weapons globally, exacerbating shortages in Africa and Asia through the blockade of Ukrainian seaports and obstruction of Black Sea navigation. Despite resistance to armed aggression, Ukraine remains a stalwart guarantor of food security for many countries and regions.
The Holodomor claimed millions of lives, but it failed to break the Ukrainian spirit’s resilience for freedom and a civilized world. Expressing gratitude to foreign partners who recognized the Holodomor as genocide, Ukraine calls on parliaments yet to condemn the crimes of the Bolshevism totalitarian regime and acknowledge the Holodomor as a genocide against the Ukrainian people.
Ukraine remembers, and the world bears witness to the enduring recognition of this tragic historical event.
