Ukraine and Germany have finalized a series of 15 agreements valued at over €8.5 billion, focusing on enhancing defense capabilities and energy support. This announcement was made by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Kyiv.

The agreements encompass a wide range of defense and energy initiatives. They include the production and procurement of drone interceptors, small missiles, radars, unmanned ground systems, and artillery. A significant aspect of the deal is the increased production of Patriot missile systems in Germany, which will bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

In a Telegram post dated October 4, Zelenskyy highlighted the strategic importance of these agreements, emphasizing their role in strengthening both nations’ industries. The agreements also involve collaboration with German companies such as Diehl Defence for IRIS-T air defense systems and Hensoldt for radar technology.

Germany has also pledged a new support package exceeding €1.3 billion, which includes defense assistance and energy sector funding. This package aims to prepare Ukraine for the upcoming winter by enhancing its energy infrastructure and developing new interceptors to counter Russian jet-powered drones.

Additionally, the agreements cover energy cooperation, with projects involving Siemens Energy to support Ukraine’s power grid and infrastructure. This collaboration includes the provision of gas turbines and other critical equipment.

The focus on faster interceptors is a response to Russia’s increased use of jet-powered Shahed-type drones, which pose a significant threat due to their speed. Zelenskyy noted that approximately 900 such drones were launched by Russia in the week preceding Merz’s visit.

Germany’s involvement in the FREYJA project, a European anti-ballistic missile defense initiative, further underscores the depth of this partnership. The project, led by Ukrainian company Fire Point, will integrate advanced radar and interceptor technologies.
