Kyiv’s McDonald’s restaurant near the Lukianivska metro station, known as the first McDonald’s ever to open in Ukraine, restarted its operations on May 27 after suffering damage during a significant missile and drone strike by Russia on the city on May 24. According to official statements from McDonald’s Ukraine, the reopening marks a continuation of service after the attack damaged the windows and facade of this iconic location.

Opened on May 24, 1997, this McDonald’s is considered a landmark in Kyiv and has been targeted several times amid the ongoing conflict since the invasion. Photos released after the attack revealed that parts of the exterior signage had melted due to the blast’s heat. Despite the repeated assaults, resulting in multiple restorations, McDonald’s has repeatedly emphasized their commitment to remain in this location due to its historical significance and the loyalty of its customer base.

The recent attack on May 24 was one of the largest aerial offensives launched by Russia in recent months, deploying 90 missiles and about 600 various drones against Ukraine. Ukrainian defenses managed to intercept a significant portion, yet extensive damage occurred across Kyiv, including the area near Lukianivska metro station. The infrastructure damage extended beyond McDonald’s, affecting a nearby shopping center which caught fire.

The Lukianivska McDonald’s reopening stands as a symbol of resilience amidst a tense geopolitical landscape. Official reports highlight that no employees were injured as they had taken shelter during the strike. With the city under regular threat, leading global brands operating in Ukraine face increased challenges, as Russia targets facilities directly and indirectly associated with major Western companies, aiming to deter foreign investment.
