NORAD detected, tracked and identified Russian surveillance aircraft entering and operating within Alaska's Air Defence Identification Zone on two separate occasions over the preceding two days, Ukrinform reported on August 11, 2022, citing the command.
NORAD explicitly said the aircraft did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace. An air defence identification zone is a monitoring area and is not the same as a country's territorial airspace.
The report described detection and tracking, not a confirmed border violation or combat engagement. It did not identify an attack on either country.
NORAD is the binational US–Canadian command responsible for aerospace warning and control and maritime warning for North America.
