Poland urgently convened the Committee of the Council of Ministers for National Security and Defence on November 15, 2022, after a missile struck the village of Przewodów near the Ukrainian border and killed two Polish citizens.
Article 4
The government was considering invoking Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which allows allies to request consultations when they believe their security is threatened, and put several military units on higher readiness, government spokesman Piotr Müller said. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki chaired the meeting.
Poland’s Foreign Ministry later said a Russian-made missile had fallen on Polish territory and summoned the Russian ambassador. Initial appearances of the debris indicated it could be of Russian origin, and Polsat News reported unofficially that it was a Kh-101 cruise missile.
Origin unclear
President Andrzej Duda said there was no conclusive evidence of who had launched the missile and called a meeting of the National Security Council. Some Polish media and experts said the debris could also have come from a Ukrainian air defence missile. Russia’s Defence Ministry denied any involvement, calling the reports a deliberate provocation.
Massive strikes
The explosion came on the day Russia launched one of its largest missile barrages of the war on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, including in the western Lviv and Volyn regions bordering Poland.
