Ukraine has aligned with 59 countries in a Joint Statement supporting the full implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), particularly prohibiting the use of riot control agents in warfare. This initiative was presented during the 29th session of the CWC Conference. Ukraine denounces the use of chemical weapons and riot control agents as serious violations of international law, undermining efforts for a chemical weapons-free world. The country’s government acknowledges the assistance of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in documenting Russian use of these agents against Ukraine. Recent OPCW reports support Ukraine’s claims, indicating evidence of chemical agents in the Dnipropetrovsk region linked to Russian forces. Since February 2023, Ukraine has documented 4,950 instances of Russia using hazardous chemical munitions. The Joint Statement also reinforces a commitment to bolster the OPCW’s support for Ukraine and ensure accountability for violations of the CWC by Russia.
