President Volodymyr Zelensky told the European Council on May 30, 2022, that Ukraine rejects attempts to offer an alternative to European Union membership and wants EU candidate status in June, UNIAN reported.

Addressing the meeting by video, Zelensky argued that European unity would remain incomplete without Ukraine. He described candidate status as a strategic decision and urged EU governments to support the country’s application.

He also called for continued military and financial assistance, closer customs and payment integration, and support for reconstruction. Zelensky advocated using Russian assets to help rebuild Ukraine and urged European partners to take part in that effort.

Ukraine submitted its EU membership application on February 28, 2022. The remarks came as European governments debated its candidacy and proposals for alternative forms of political cooperation.
