President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has asserted that Russia’s strategy of energy weaponization and manipulative tactics has led to significant losses for Moscow, particularly in relation to the European gas market. He highlighted that gas transit from Ukraine to Europe, which once exceeded 130 billion cubic meters annually, has now dropped to zero, marking a substantial defeat for Russia.<\/p>\n

Zelensky emphasized that this shift is a result of Russia’s actions, which have alienated potential partners and eliminated access to one of its most lucrative markets. He called attention to the need for Europe to support Moldova during its energy transformation, urging a departure from relationships with Russia that resemble “mafia-style schemes.”<\/p>\n

He also expressed hope for increased American gas supplies to Europe, referencing statements from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump regarding this issue. Zelensky believes that greater cooperation and gas availability from trustworthy partners will create more competitive market prices and help Europe move away from its dependency on Russian energy.<\/p>\n

Earlier, on January 1, Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas through its territories, citing national security reasons, a move that had been communicated to international partners in advance. The European Commission confirmed its readiness for this cessation of Russian gas transit via Ukraine starting January 1, 2025.<\/p>\n
