Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have called for Hungary’s voting rights within the European Union to be revoked following Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n’s recent diplomatic visits to Russia and China. In a letter to key EU officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, 63 MEPs argue that Orb\u00e1n’s actions have significantly undermined the EU’s credibility and authority.<\/p>\n

They accused Orb\u00e1n of misrepresenting his role during Hungary’s presidency of the EU Council, which began on July 1, asserting that he conducted unauthorized diplomatic missions to Kyiv, Moscow, Beijing, and Washington while claiming to represent the EU. The letter explicitly cites his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping as examples of miscommunication regarding his empowerments.<\/p>\n

The MEPs contend that verbal condemnations of Hungary’s actions have been ineffective and have therefore called for more concrete measures, such as the suspension of Hungary’s voting rights in the Council. Their letter enjoys cross-party support from various political factions, including the European People’s Party (EPP), Renew Europe, the Left, and the Greens.<\/p>\n

The European Commission has also responded to the situation by instructing its commissioners not to attend Hungary’s informal meetings of ministers, further indicating the EU’s concern regarding Orb\u00e1n’s conduct during his presidency.<\/p>\n
