Die im Herzen der Stadt gelegene Kathedrale ist nicht nur ein Wahrzeichen der Stadt, sondern hat als ehemalige Mutterkathedrale der ukrainisch-orthodoxen Kirche - des Kiewer Patriarchats - auch eine gro\u00dfe Bedeutung.<\/p>\n<p>Die Anf\u00e4nge der Wolodymyr-Kathedrale gehen auf das Jahr 1852 zur\u00fcck, als der Moskauer Metropolit Philaret den Bau einer gro\u00dfen Kathedrale vorschlug, um den 900. Jahrestag der Taufe der Kiewer Rus' durch F\u00fcrst Wolodymyr den Gro\u00dfen zu begehen. Die Initiative fand gro\u00dfe Unterst\u00fctzung in der Bev\u00f6lkerung des gesamten Russischen Reiches, so dass bis 1859 ein betr\u00e4chtlicher Betrag von 100.000 Rubel gesammelt werden konnte. Die Kiewer Pechersk Lawra, ein renommiertes Kloster, leistete einen wichtigen Beitrag, indem sie eine Million Ziegelsteine f\u00fcr den Bau zur Verf\u00fcgung stellte.<\/p>\n<p>Die architektonische Vision, die zun\u00e4chst von Architekten wie I. Schtrom, P. Sparro, R. Bemhardt, K. Majewski und W. Nikolajew entworfen wurde, gipfelte in dem neobyzantinischen Design, das wir heute sehen. Den letzten Schliff erhielt der Bau von Alexander Vikentievich Beretti. Das Ergebnis ist ein traditioneller sechsst\u00f6ckiger, dreigliedriger Tempel, der von sieben Kuppeln gekr\u00f6nt wird, wobei die Hauptkuppel eine H\u00f6he von 49 Metern erreicht.<\/p>\n<p>Im Inneren der Kathedrale erwartet den Besucher ein lebendiges und fesselndes Interieur. Die Kathedrale ist mit Mosaiken geschm\u00fcckt, die von Kunsthandwerkern aus Venedig angefertigt wurden. Die Fresken, die unter der Leitung von Professor Adrian Prakhov entstanden sind, stammen von ber\u00fchmten Malern wie Wilhelm Kotarbi\u0144ski, Mikhail Nesterov, Mykola Pymonenko und anderen. H. Zaieman meisterhaft gestaltet wurden. Die kunstvolle Ikonostase aus wei\u00dfem Marmor aus Carrara verleiht der Kathedrale noch mehr Pracht. Obwohl sie 1882 fertiggestellt wurde, wurden die Gem\u00e4lde erst 1896 vollendet.<\/p>\n<p>Die St.-Wolodymyr-Kathedrale hat turbulente Zeiten \u00fcberstanden und drohte im polnisch-sowjetischen Krieg von 1920 zerst\u00f6rt zu werden. In der Sowjetzeit wurde sie in ein Museum f\u00fcr Religion und Atheismus umgewandelt und entging nur knapp dem Abriss. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg nahm die Kathedrale ihre Rolle als funktionierende orthodoxe Kirche wieder auf und spielte eine zentrale Rolle bei der Wiederbelebung der orthodoxen Religion im Jahr 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Nach der Aufl\u00f6sung der Sowjetunion wurde das Eigentum an der Kathedrale zu einem Streitpunkt zwischen den Konfessionen, die in der ukrainisch-orthodoxen Christenheit vertreten sein wollten. Schlie\u00dflich erlangte die ukrainisch-orthodoxe Kirche - das Kiewer Patriarchat - die Kontrolle \u00fcber die Kathedrale.
