Kyiv has unveiled a temporary memorial walkway dedicated to Georgiy Gongadze, a prominent Ukrainian-Georgian journalist and activist who was tragically murdered in September 2000. The opening of the walkway marks the beginning of Georgiy Gongadze Memorial Week, a time to honor his enduring legacy and impact on Ukraine’s civil society, freedom of speech, and media landscape.

Located in front of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, the exhibition features information boards detailing Gongadze’s life and his vital role in Ukraine’s fight for democracy. Visitors can explore the exhibit until it closes on September 22.

During the opening ceremony, several notable speakers highlighted Gongadze’s importance. Vladyslav Zinkevych, Programme Director of the Georgiy Gongadze Prize, emphasized that Gongadze’s contributions remain deeply relevant today. “Georgiy’s thoughts, activity, and worldview still inspire Ukraine’s ongoing struggle for justice and democratic values,” Zinkevych stated.

Other speakers included human rights activists, journalists, and representatives of the Gongadze family, all of whom reiterated the significance of remembering those who sacrificed for Ukraine’s future.

The event concluded with a tribute at Gongadze’s grave in Kyiv’s Podol district, a poignant reminder of the continuing fight for freedom and justice in Ukraine.
