Switzerland has become the 15th member of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), a project which seeks to build a unified air and missile defence system across Europe. The system was initiated by Germany following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and was designed to allow European countries to purchase defence systems together and train together.

US intelligence discovered earlier this year that the Russian government planned to assassinate the chief executive of a powerful German arms manufacturer that has been producing artillery shells and military vehicles for Ukraine, according to 5 US and Western officials familiar with the episode. The plot was one of a series of Russian plans to assassinate defence industry executives across Europe who were supporting Ukraine’s war effort, the sources said.
