Speaking after nearly four years of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he acknowledged the exhaustion felt across Ukrainian society while insisting that fatigue should not be confused with willingness to surrender. Zelenskyy said any settlement must preserve Ukraine’s future and security rather than simply halt fighting for a short period. In his view, signing a weak agreement would only postpone further violence, while a durable settlement must be strong enough to prevent Russia from restarting the conflict.

The Ukrainian president said recent U.S.-led diplomatic efforts have brought a possible peace agreement close to completion. He described the framework as roughly 90% ready following weeks of negotiations and his recent talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida. However, Zelenskyy stressed that the remaining 10% contains the most difficult and consequential questions. Those unresolved issues, he said, will determine not only whether peace can last but also Ukraine’s future and the broader security of Europe. His remarks suggested that the final stage of negotiations may prove far more difficult than the progress already achieved.

Territory remains the central obstacle. Russia currently occupies around 19% of Ukraine, mainly in the south and east, and President Vladimir Putin continues to demand that Ukrainian forces leave areas of the Donbas that Russian troops have not captured. Kyiv rejects that demand and favors stopping the war along the present battle lines rather than voluntarily surrendering additional territory. Zelenskyy characterized Moscow’s insistence on a full Ukrainian withdrawal from Donbas as deceptive and questioned why such demands should be treated as legitimate diplomacy.

The address therefore combined a message of readiness for negotiation with a clear warning against concessions that could undermine Ukrainian sovereignty or create conditions for renewed Russian aggression. Zelenskyy presented the approaching agreement not as a race to secure a ceasefire at any price, but as an effort to establish a settlement capable of lasting for years. His central argument was that Ukrainians may be deeply tired of war, yet they remain determined that peace must protect the country rather than bring about its gradual defeat.

Read more at:

https://www.reuters.com/world/zelenskiy-says-he-wont-sign-weak-deal-that-will-only-prolong-war-2025-12-31/

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine wants an end to the war but will not accept a weak agreement that risks renewed conflict.
