Major General Dmytro Marchenko said Ukraine’s prospects for a counteroffensive and the liberation of occupied territory by the end of summer depended on receiving the necessary weapons promptly, UNIAN reported on June 15, 2022.

Speaking to Radio Liberty’s Crimea.Realities, the general cautioned that he did not have enough information to make a precise forecast. His comments were a conditional assessment, not a confirmed timetable for an operation.

Marchenko warned that delayed deliveries would give Russian forces more time to strengthen their positions and prolong the fighting. He credited Ukrainian resistance in Mykolaiv, whose defence he had led after the full-scale invasion began, with overturning his initial fears that the city would be encircled.

He also said Russian war crimes had taken negotiations past a point of no return and argued that Ukraine had an opportunity to defend its independence.
