Ukraine’s parliament ratifies ICC’s Rome Statute

Ukraine’s parliament ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). It will come into force 60 days after being received by the UN Secretary-General. The ratification was adopted with a caveat that Ukraine would not recognise the court’s jurisdiction over Ukrainian citizens in the case of war crimes for 7 years following its official adoption.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, August 19, 2024

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on August 19 further codifying a vague Russian state ideology into Russian law without concretely modifying the Russian Constitution. Putin’s effort to codify a specific ideology may be intended to counter the Russian ultranationalist community’s efforts to establish an accepted national ideology – ISW.

Sanctions on Russia Hurt Neighbor So Much It Won’t Always Comply

Kazakhstan is drawing a new line in its enforcement of sanctions targeting Russia, vowing to put its own economic interests first as it also deepens trade ties with countries from Iran to China. Ukraine’s invasion of Russia is erasing Vladimir Putin’s last red lines

Ukraine’s Kursk offensive poses serious questions about the credibility of Russia’s sabre-rattling and the rationality behind the West’s abundance of caution, as it is surely the reddest of all red lines. If Russia was at all serious about a possible nuclear escalation, this would be the moment to make good on its many threats. Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, August 7, 2024

On August 7, 2023, Ukrainian forces achieved confirmed advances of up to 10 kilometers into Russia’s Kursk Oblast during ongoing mechanized offensive operations on Russian territory. Geolocated footage from August 6 and 7 indicated that Ukrainian armored vehicles reached positions along the 38K-030 route, approximately 10 kilometers from the border. Reports suggest that Ukrainian forces have penetrated at least two Russian defensive lines and seized significant territory, with at least 45 square kilometers claimed as captured since the operation began.
