Switzerland has joined the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), a project aimed at creating a unified air and missile defense system across Europe. The ESSI allows European countries to jointly purchase defense systems, train together, and coordinate logistical aspects of ground-based air defense, with a current focus on medium-range defense systems. However, the project has been met with opposition in Switzerland due to concerns that it contradicts the country’s tradition of neutrality. The Swiss government has assured that participation in ESSI is compatible with the country’s neutral status, allowing Switzerland to decide its level of participation and withdraw cooperation if necessary.
