Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently shared a video showing the interrogation of North Korean soldiers captured in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. He stated that Ukraine is willing to facilitate their return to North Korea as part of a potential prisoner exchange with Russia. Zelenskyy emphasized that the presence of North Korean soldiers highlights the reliance of the Russian army on military support from Pyongyang.
In the interrogation video, one of the captured soldiers displayed confusion about fighting against Ukraine, claiming he had only come for training. Initially expressing a desire to stay in Ukraine, he later indicated that he would follow orders to return if necessary. The other soldier expressed a clear wish to return home.
Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s readiness to exchange these individuals for Ukrainian soldiers held captive in Russia. He noted that there might be more North Korean prisoners in the future and that those who choose to stay could contribute to spreading awareness about the conflict in their home country.
The context includes the capture of these soldiers on January 11, as reported by both Zelenskyy and the Security Service of Ukraine. This has sparked discussions about North Korea’s involvement in the conflict, particularly following the discovery of potentially forged military identification on one of the prisoners.
