South Korea and the United States are collaborating on joint research to enhance defenses against cryptocurrency theft, particularly from North Korea-linked hackers, following a surge in bitcoin prices. The initiative is based on a recent technical agreement between the South Korean government and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, focusing on developing technologies to prevent cryptocurrency-targeted attacks and track stolen assets. The South Korean science ministry is backing this research through 2026 via the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation.
Researchers from South Korea, including those from Korea University, and U.S. counterparts from the RAND Corp. will work together to create systems aimed at preventing and tracking hacks, as well as analyzing methods used for laundering stolen cryptocurrency. North Korea has emerged as a significant threat in the cryptocurrency space, with hackers associated with the regime reportedly stealing $1.34 billion in crypto across 47 incidents this year, according to Chainalysis.
