On August 7, 2023, Ukrainian forces achieved confirmed advances of up to 10 kilometers into Russia's Kursk Oblast during ongoing mechanized offensive operations on Russian territory. Geolocated footage from August 6 and 7 indicated that Ukrainian armored vehicles reached positions along the 38K-030 route, approximately 10 kilometers from the border. Reports suggest that Ukrainian forces have penetrated at least two Russian defensive lines and seized significant territory, with at least 45 square kilometers claimed as captured since the operation began. Ukrainian forces reportedly took control of several settlements, including Nikolaevo-Daryino and Darino, and were actively operating within Lyubimovka. Russian sources indicated that Ukrainian troops were advancing along key highways, engaging in combat in the vicinity of Korenovo and Sudzha. The Sudzha checkpoint and nearby gas distribution station were reportedly captured, along with over 40 Russian prisoners of war. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin characterized the Ukrainian incursions as a "large-scale provocation" but assured that the situation was under control. Military officials appeared to downplay the severity of the incursion despite internal criticisms from Russian milbloggers regarding the military's preparedness and response to Ukrainian offensives. Some Russian commentators expressed dissatisfaction with the military command's failure to anticipate or prevent the incursions, suggesting that Russian leadership was underestimating the capabilities and intentions of Ukrainian forces. Additionally, reports surfaced that Ukrainian forces successfully downed Russian helicopters using first-person view (FPV) drones, demonstrating an evolution in their drone warfare tactics. This development indicates a significant enhancement in Ukraine's drone operations, which could counterbalance Russian air capabilities. Even with Russia’s “superior aviation” and “very strong” air defences, Kyiv has a plan to retake Crimea. The UAF will do “everything possible to reach the internationally recognised borders of 1991. We must win… to free our citizens who are in the occupied territories and are suffering”, according to UAF Commander-in-Chief, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi.
