Since February 2022, 4,613 cases have been recorded. A draft of the peace deal Russia offered to Ukraine at the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022 was leaked. Obtained by RFE/FL, the unilateral terms of the document effectively meant Kyiv’s capitulation. ‘Ecocide’ is being used as a weapon of war in Ukraine. It should be one of the crimes tried in the International Criminal Court

Since February 24, 2022, Russia has been waging simultaneous wars in Ukraine: conventional, hybrid, or cyber warfare, and environmental, or “ecocide”. Ecocide, used as a weapon of war, occurs alongside the systematic destruction of the country’s civilian infrastructure and energy network. But ecocide is not just the collateral damage of conventional warfare; in the case of Ukraine, the aim is to make the country’s regions uninhabitable for civilian life. It should be one of the crimes tried by the ICC.
