Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, recently returned from the Czech Republic, where he engaged with government officials as the nation prepares to assume the Presidency of the European Union (EU) on July 1. This transition occurs at a pivotal time when the EU, its Member States, and other countries continue to demonstrate remarkable solidarity in addressing the global refugee crisis.<\/p>\n

On World Refugee Day 2022, Ben Stiller, a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, emphasized the collective responsibility to protect those forced to flee. During his visit to Poland and Ukraine, Stiller met with individuals recently displaced by conflict, urging global compassion and support for refugees worldwide.<\/p>\n

Karolina Lindholm Billing, UNHCR Representative in Ukraine, shared insights from her recent travels across Kyiv, Poltava, Dnipro, Zaporizhia, and Vinnytsya. She highlighted the fluid and precarious situation faced by internally displaced people and the critical role of local authorities and volunteers in providing support.<\/p>\n

In Moldova, business owners Nadejda Grosu and Vitalie Ovcearenco transformed their office space into a refuge for displaced families, including a six-year-old girl from Odesa. Their company, which manufactures wooden pallets, has adapted to the humanitarian needs arising from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado reported on the agency’s expanded operations in Poland, a primary destination for over 3.5 million Ukrainian refugees. The UN Refugee Agency continues to enhance its efforts to support those who have fled the conflict and settled across the country.<\/p>\n
