Patriarch Kirill, head of the Kremlin-controlled Russian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate (ROC MP), highlighted ongoing social and ideological divides within Russian society while reiterating boilerplate justifications for the war in Ukraine. Kirill noted that while the war in Ukraine is the “most pressing threat” to the Russian state, some people within Russian society “prefer to ignore” what is happening on the frontline in Ukraine and the struggles of people who live in Russian border areas closer to the combat zone.
