The Verkhovna Rada’s Committee for Regulations and Organization of Parliamentary Work has recommended the consideration of Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, a Member of Parliament from the Holos faction, for the position of Chairman of the Committee on Freedom of Speech. The recommendation, outlined in draft resolution No. 10296, includes Yurchyshyn’s statement on his election, prompting the Regulatory Committee to expedite the resolution’s inclusion in the Rada’s session agenda. Currently chaired by Yevhen Brahar of the Servant of the People faction, the Committee may witness a change in leadership following the recent dismissal of Nestor Shufrych on charges of treason. The Pecherskyi District Court of Kyiv has extended Shufrych’s detention until December 15.

About the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, also known simply as the Rada, is the unicameral parliament with 450 deputies presided over by a speaker. Established in 1938 as the Supreme Soviet, it evolved through political changes, and the current parliament is the ninth convocation. Due to geopolitical issues, elections weren’t held in Donbas and Crimea in 2014 and 2019, resulting in 424 deputies in the current composition. The voting system is mixed, combining party lists and first-past-the-post in single-member constituencies. The next election in 2023 is slated to follow a proportional scheme as per the election law effective from January 1, 2020.
