On December 25, 2023, Russia launched a significant attack on Ukraine, deploying over 70 missiles and more than 100 strike drones, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Ukrainian air defense systems were able to intercept more than 50 missiles and a substantial number of drones. Zelenskyy condemned the timing of the attack, stating that it was a “deliberate choice” by President Putin to carry out the assault on Christmas, an act he described as “inhumane.” The attack led to multiple impacts and power outages across various regions in Ukraine.

In a prior incident on the night of December 24, Russian forces used Tu-95MS strategic bombers to launch Kalibr cruise missiles from the Black Sea, with multiple drone assaults targeting Ukrainian cities. An early morning warning issued by the Ukrainian military highlighted the incoming cruise missiles, leading to explosions reported in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and other areas like Dnipro, Samar, Kamyanske, and Kryvyi Rih.

On Christmas Day, Kharkiv was severely affected, enduring at least seven strikes that caused casualties, infrastructure damage, and fires at the impact sites. The state-owned energy company, Ukrenergo, initiated emergency power outages due to the missile and drone attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as confirmed by Minister of Energy German Halushchenko. DTEK representatives also reported significant damage to their thermal power plants as a result of the ongoing strikes, emphasizing the continued threat to Ukraine’s energy sector.
