On Tuesday, during a United Nations Security Council meeting, U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced a significant initiative. The United States, in collaboration with Ukraine and other UN member states, will advocate for the suspension of Russia’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council. This statement was reported by a correspondent from Ukrinform.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield emphasized that Russia should not occupy a respected position in an organization dedicated solely to upholding human rights. She highlighted that Russia’s membership in the Council not only represents extreme hypocrisy but also poses a danger, as Russia uses its membership as a platform for spreading false propaganda.
She further stated, “The continuous lies we hear from the Russian representative are further evidence that they do not belong in the UN Human Rights Council.” The ambassador pointed out that Russian forces continue to commit war crimes in Ukraine, a situation that existed even before the world witnessed the horrific images from Bucha.
Thomas-Greenfield drew attention to the brutal killings of civilians, as well as the abductions of children, religious and community leaders, and mayors—anyone who dared to oppose Russian aggression. Additionally, she reminded the Council of the existence of so-called ‘filtration camps’ in Russia, which evoke chilling memories of World War II.
