Meeting preparation(s) in Saudi Arabia

As US and Ukrainian officials prepare to meet in Saudi Arabia this week, President Donald Trump has privately made clear to aides that a signed minerals deal between Washington and Kyiv won’t be enough to restart aid and intelligence sharing, according to an administration official and another US official. Trump wants the deal, which would give the US a stake in Ukraine’s mineral resources, signed. But he also wants to see a change in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s attitude toward peace talks, the officials said, including a willingness to make concessions such as giving up territory to Russia. Trump also wants Zelenskyy to make some movement toward elections in Ukraine and possibly toward stepping down as his country’s leader, the officials...

Solidarity movement

Former Polish President and leader of the Solidarity movement, Lech Wałęsa, published an open letter to US President Donald Trump signed by 39 other former Polish political prisoners. "Dear Mr President, We watched the report of your conversation with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy with horror and distaste. We consider your expectations regarding showing respect and gratitude for the material assistance provided by the United States to Ukraine fighting against Russia to be offensive. Gratitude is due to the heroic Ukrainian soldiers who shed blood in defence of the values of the free world. They are the ones who have been dying on the front lines for over 11 years in the name of these values and the independence of their homeland attacked by Putin's Russia. We do not understand how the leader of a country that is a symbol of the free world can not see this. We were also horrified by the fact that the atmosphere in the Oval Office during this conversation reminded us of the one we remember well from interrogations by the Security Service and courtrooms in communist courts. Prosecutors and judges, commissioned by the all-powerful communist political police, also explained to us that they held all the cards and we held none. They demanded that we cease our activities, arguing that thousands of innocent people were suffering because of us. They deprived us of our freedom and civil rights because we refused to cooperate with the authorities and did not show them gratitude. We are shocked that you treated President Volodymyr Zelensky in a similar...

The London Summit

The London Summit

Leaders discussed ongoing financial support for Ukraine's defence industry, including investments in domestic arms production and increased funding for Europe's defence sector. Sanctions against Russia, including frozen Russian assets, are to remain until a lasting peace is achieved. There was broad agreement that strong security guarantees must underpin any potential ceasefire, with consideration given to leveraging NATO mechanisms and strengthening Ukraine's military. A ceasefire must begin with a prisoner exchange and the return of children, signalling Russia's genuine commitment to peace. Leaders also emphasised the US role in ensuring sufficient support and transatlantic unity to end the war. A concrete plan, based on proposals from France and the UK, will continue to be developed, with European leaders set to present an enhanced defence strategy at an upcoming...
