On August 8, Steffen Hebestreit, spokesperson for the German federal government, addressed the media, confirming that Chancellor Olaf Scholz firmly rules out the use of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, even in a gas crisis. Hebestreit emphasized that the pipeline remains uncertified and will not be operational.<\/p>\n

Despite facing challenging months ahead due to reduced gas supplies from Russia, Hebestreit assured that measures are being taken to mitigate the negative impacts. He reiterated Germany’s commitment to sanctions against the Kremlin, underscoring Berlin’s unwavering support for Ukraine alongside international partners.<\/p>\n

Annika Einhorn from the Ministry of Economics highlighted that, from Germany’s perspective, it is entirely feasible to increase gas supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline or transport the turbine to Russia. However, neither action is occurring, indicating a politically motivated situation rather than technical constraints.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Economics reported that gas storage facilities are over 70% full, with supplies coming from Norway, the Netherlands, and minimal amounts from Russia. The controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline was completed last fall despite sanctions and obstacles, but its certification was halted on February 22 following Russia’s recognition of the so-called ‘L\/DNR’ regions.<\/p>\n

Recent statements from the Kremlin, former Chancellor Gerhard Schr\u00f6der, and leaders from northern German regions suggested that activating Nord Stream 2 could resolve Germany’s gas shortage. However, the German government remains steadfast in its current stance.<\/p>\n
