In July, Ukraine’s air defense systems faced a severe shortage of interceptor missiles, managing to intercept only 29 out of 195 ballistic missiles launched by Russia, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s statement on August 7. This shortage has posed significant challenges for Ukrainian forces, as highlighted by recent attacks.
On August 5, Ukrainian forces were unable to intercept any of the 24 ballistic missiles or four Zircon anti-ship missiles launched by Russia. Earlier, on August 1, Ukraine managed to shoot down just one out of 27 ballistic missiles, attributing the difficulty to a lack of air defense interceptors, particularly the U.S.-made Patriot systems.
The Defense Ministry’s report included details on the types of ballistic missiles used, such as Russian Iskander-M, 48N6DM, and North Korean KN-23 missiles. It also mentioned Zircon missiles, which Russia claims are hypersonic cruise missiles, though they may follow a quasi-ballistic flight path.
In addition to the ballistic missiles, another 40 failed to reach their targets. Russia also launched 265 cruise missiles, including Kalibr, Iskander-K, and Kh-101, with Ukrainian forces successfully intercepting 187 of them.
Throughout July, Ukrainian forces detected 8,653 Russian attack drones, intercepting 5,142, including Shahed-, Gerbera-, and Italmas-type drones. In total, Russia launched over 9,000 attack drones and missiles, excluding reconnaissance drones, with Ukraine intercepting more than 5,300 using various defense systems.
Ballistic missiles have been particularly challenging, with Ukraine downing only a few during major attacks in July. The Defense Ministry emphasized the need for additional air defense systems and interceptor missiles, working with international partners to address this challenge.
Ukraine is also pursuing Meteor missiles for its Gripen fighter jets to counter Russian aircraft launching guided bombs. The ongoing conflict underscores the critical need for enhanced air defense capabilities to protect Ukrainian territories.
