US Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) has shipped the first batch of Bradley Fighting Vehicles to Ukraine, the US military said in late January 2023.
More than 60 Bradleys
The shipment of more than 60 Bradleys left North Charleston, South Carolina, and will give Ukrainian forces additional offensive and defensive capabilities to protect their borders against Russia’s illegal invasion, according to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service.
The vehicles were provided under a $2.85 billion US military aid package.
“A very powerful vehicle”
“Our support to Ukraine would not be possible without the strong relationships we have with our Allies and Partners,” said Gen. Jacqueline Van Ovost, commander of USTRANSCOM.
“The Bradley is a very powerful vehicle that we are providing to the Ukrainians,” said Lt. Col. Rebecca D’Angelo, commander of the 841st Transportation Battalion.
Armour for a counteroffensive
The Bradley is a tracked infantry fighting vehicle armed with a 25mm cannon and TOW anti-tank missiles. Washington announced in January that it would send Bradleys to Ukraine, alongside pledges by Germany of Marder vehicles and Leopard 2 tanks, as allies prepared Kyiv for an expected spring counteroffensive.
