France has committed to expediting the delivery of missiles and other military equipment to Ukraine following a significant phone conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron on August 22. This decision comes in the wake of a series of deadly Russian attacks targeting Ukrainian civilians.

President Macron emphasized the importance of equipping Ukraine with the necessary tools to defend its airspace and counter the ongoing aggression. He announced on social media that France would enhance its support by supplying interceptors to Ukraine. Additionally, Macron agreed to assist Kyiv in engaging with international partners who have access to Patriot air defense systems, a crucial component in protecting Ukrainian civilians from Russian ballistic missile threats.

Zelensky expressed gratitude towards Macron for France’s readiness to grant licenses enabling Ukraine to produce its own missiles. Recently, Paris authorized Ukraine to manufacture ASTER missiles for SAMP/T air defense systems and SCALP cruise missiles. This move is part of a broader strategy to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

On the same day, Zelensky also held discussions with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and former U.S. envoy to Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg, regarding Ukraine’s urgent air defense requirements. Zelensky highlighted the critical need for interceptors for Patriot systems to navigate the upcoming winter, emphasizing Ukraine’s willingness to purchase them.

Following talks with Wadephul, Zelensky announced that Germany and Ukraine were prepared to formalize a drone production agreement. Last month, both nations agreed to co-produce high-speed BARS jet-powered drones, with Germany financing the initial phase of the project.

The urgency of these measures is underscored by recent Russian attacks, including strikes on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih and in Kyiv, resulting in numerous casualties. The situation highlights the pressing need for enhanced defensive measures to protect Ukrainian cities from relentless bombardments.
