Representatives of six national movements have announced the Free Nations League, a political platform advocating decolonisation and self-determination for peoples within the Russian Federation, according to Free Idel-Ural.

The initiative brings together activists representing Bashkir, Buryat, Ingush, Kalmyk, Erzya and Udege communities. Its founders argue that debates about Russia’s future after the war in Ukraine too often focus on the federal government while overlooking the aspirations of its constituent peoples.

The platform proposes that regions should be entitled to sovereignty following the collapse of the current political regime. This is the organisers’ political position, not an existing legal change. They say the league is open to participants who reject imperialism and recognise the right of peoples to self-determination.

Organisers named in the report include Oirat-Kalmyk activist Vladimir Dovdanov, Bashkir National Political Centre leader Ruslan Gabbasov, Erzya elder Syres Bolyaen and Buryat activists Dorzho Dugarov and Radzhana Dugar-De Ponte. They intend to build ties with civil-society organisations and political parties in Europe, Turkey and Kazakhstan.
