Ukraine could need roughly a decade to clear mines and explosive remnants of war from its land and territorial waters, a State Emergency Service spokesperson said on June 24, 2022, according to The Guardian’s live coverage.

Oleksandr Khorunzhiy described up to ten years as an optimistic estimate because areas of active fighting and occupation could not yet be fully assessed. He said nearly 300,000 square kilometres were regarded as potentially contaminated.

At the time of his briefing, crews had cleared about 620 square kilometres and dealt with thousands of explosive devices, including approximately 2,000 air-dropped bombs.

The initial priorities were infrastructure, residential areas and roads. Clearing forests, rivers and the coastline would take longer, he said. The estimate concerned the scale of future clearance work, not a fixed completion date.
