The European Parliament has overwhelmingly approved a resolution urging EU member states to work towards granting Ukraine candidate status for EU membership. This significant move reflects the EU’s support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict with Russia.

According to the report by ‘European Pravda,’ the resolution was passed with 637 votes in favor, while only 13 members opposed, and 26 abstained. The resolution strongly condemns Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and demands the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory. Furthermore, it calls on EU institutions to actively pursue Ukraine’s candidacy for EU membership.

While the European Parliament itself lacks the authority to make binding decisions regarding candidate status or the accession process, these decisions rest solely with the EU member states. Nevertheless, the resolution signifies a strong political statement of support for Ukraine’s European aspirations.

During discussions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, MEPs expressed unwavering support for Ukraine and its efforts to join the European community. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, addressing the European Parliament, urged the EU to provide Ukraine with all necessary support and a clear membership perspective.

Prior to Zelensky’s address, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola affirmed the Parliament’s recognition of Ukraine’s European perspective and its commitment to working towards granting Ukraine candidate status. This development comes as the European Union officially began the process of reviewing Ukraine’s application for membership on March 1.

The path to EU membership for Ukraine is being closely monitored, with discussions focusing on the accelerated consideration of Ukraine’s application and the potential for a fast-track accession process.
