Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a successful operation by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) leading to the capture of pro-Russian politician Viktor Medvedchuk, who is also the godfather to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s children. Zelensky shared the news on Facebook, expressing his gratitude to the SBU and posting a photo of Medvedchuk in military attire adorned with a Ukrainian flag patch.

Medvedchuk had been under house arrest since October 12, 2021, due to allegations of purchasing coal from Russia through occupied territories, a move considered as state treason. His house arrest was initially set until December 7, 2021, but was extended following further legal proceedings. The prosecution had requested a bail of one billion hryvnias, although Medvedchuk claimed that the evidence against him was fabricated.

On February 27, it was reported that Medvedchuk had escaped house arrest. This development followed a report by the investigative project Bihus.Info on February 21, which noted heightened security presence around Medvedchuk’s residence. Witnesses observed police and security personnel at the scene, and journalists reported that belongings were being removed from the property.

The capture of Medvedchuk marks a significant moment in Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to counter pro-Russian influences within its borders. The operation underscores the Ukrainian government’s commitment to maintaining national security and sovereignty amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
