German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany had prepared for Russia to largely cut off gas supplies because of the war against Ukraine, Bloomberg reported on September 10, 2022. The report was also carried by Fortune.

Scholz pointed to gas savings, the use of coal-fired generation and preparations for liquefied natural gas imports along the northern coast. He also discussed the possible availability of remaining southern nuclear plants as a contingency the following year.

His assessment was contested. Germany's Association of Towns and Municipalities warned that the country was not doing enough to prepare and highlighted risks to the electricity system. DIW economist Marcel Fratzscher warned of recession and business failures.

The remarks expressed the government's confidence in its preparations, not a guarantee that energy shortages or economic damage could not occur. LNG capacity and emergency generation measures were part of an evolving response, not proof that every planned facility was already operating.
