The United States and its allies are working with Ukraine to weave together a range of technology, weapons, tactics and intelligence to help thwart Russia’s missile and drone attacks, three Pentagon officials told The New York Times, which reported on December 29, 2022.

What has been delivered

Two NASAMS air defence systems have been delivered to Ukraine, along with interceptor missiles for Hawk medium-range and Avenger short-range air defence systems and more than 1,600 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, according to the report.

Layered defence

The aim is to build a layered network in which different systems cover different ranges and threats, from cruise missiles to the Iranian-made Shahed drones Russia has used to strike Ukrainian cities and power plants. Intelligence and early warning help Ukrainian forces direct scarce interceptors where they are most needed.

A winter campaign

Russia has carried out repeated waves of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since October, causing widespread blackouts. Ukraine’s air force has reported shooting down a large share of incoming missiles and drones, but Kyiv has continued to press its partners for more advanced systems. On December 21, the United States announced that it would provide a Patriot air defence battery to Ukraine.
