World Athletics, the global governing body for the sport, has determined to uphold sanctions against Belarusian athletes, resisting advice from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to relax these restrictions. The decision was reinforced by the organization’s president, Sebastian Coe, amidst continuing tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Initially enforced in March 2022, these sanctions prohibit Belarusian and Russian athletes, as well as officials and personnel, from participating in competitions.

Coe explained that any consideration for lifting these sanctions would only occur once there is evident progress in peace talks, emphasizing the council’s unified stance to uphold the decisions made previously. This decision arrives despite the IOC’s recommendation issued on May 7th to allow Belarusian athletes back into international competition in certain sports, sometimes under neutral status. Currently, Belarusian athletes can only participate in international sporting events under national symbols if they’re engaged in aquatic sports, judo, sambo, taekwondo, football, futsal, and beach soccer. Other sports require them to compete under a neutral status.

The proposal from the IOC to ease these restrictions has met resistance from the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, which insists on keeping the sanctions. This position reflects broader geopolitical tensions and the international sports community’s stance on accountability regarding political conflict. World Athletics’ decision is a testament to the organization’s dedication to maintaining its ethical standpoints while awaiting tangible progress toward conflict resolution. As the world hopes for resolutions, the debate over sanctions represents the complex interplay between sports, politics, and international relations, challenging organizations like World Athletics to balance pressure from various global entities while holding to their principles.
