Sweden has made a notable contribution to Ukraine’s defense capabilities by announcing the free transfer of 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets. Alongside this, Sweden is opening negotiations for the sale of an additional 22 Gripen E aircraft, which are the most modern variant of the Gripen jet. This announcement was made during a joint briefing held by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Uppsala Air Base.
The transfer and potential sale of these advanced fighter jets reflect deepening defense cooperation between Sweden and Ukraine. The Gripen jets, particularly prized for their operational capabilities on short runways and ease of maintenance, will enhance Ukraine’s air defense by keeping Russian aircraft at bay. These jets come equipped with missiles capable of targeting threats up to 200 kilometers away, further empowering Ukraine’s efforts to secure its airspace against Russian aggression.
While Ukraine will receive the initial set of aircraft freely, discussions continue regarding the purchase of the 22 Gripen E jets, with deliveries projected to begin by 2027. Kyiv has expressed the intention to commence receiving their first Gripens within the upcoming 10 months. Such bolstering of Ukraine’s air fleet will be funded in part by a €90 billion loan package from the EU, demonstrating international support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict with Russia.
This defense collaboration marks a significant step for Ukraine in replacing its Soviet-era aircraft and modernizing its tactical air response, which currently includes a mix of older F-16s and Mirage fighters. The advanced avionics, radar systems, and missile capabilities of the Gripen jets are optimized for modern combat scenarios, providing a more robust response to aerial threats posed by Russia.
