By the close of the year, Ukraine is set to enhance the capabilities of its domestic energy sector, enabling the export of an electricity export capacity of approximately 800 megawatts to the European Union. This ambitious plan was announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, highlighting a significant stride in Ukraine’s energy strategy.
In a recent government meeting, Shmyhal emphasized Ukraine’s proactive integration into the European energy network, ENTSO-E, which was achieved ahead of schedule in mid-March. This integration has already facilitated the export of Ukrainian electricity to European markets, marking a pivotal development in the region’s energy dynamics.
The Prime Minister noted a substantial increase in electricity exports to Poland, which surged by 35% in April compared to January, prior to the onset of the conflict. This growth underscores Ukraine’s commitment to strengthening its energy ties with European partners.
Shmyhal further elaborated on the strategic importance of expanding Ukraine’s energy export capacity. By exporting an electricity export capacity of 800 MW to the EU, Ukraine aims to assist Europe in reducing its reliance on Russian coal and gas, thereby contributing to the continent’s energy security and diversification efforts.
